Therapy for New Parents, Perinatal Struggles, and the Weight You Weren't Ready For

Grounded, strengths-based support for the seasons of life that ask more of you than you expected.

LET'S START HERE

Maybe the pregnancy or the new baby was supposed to feel like joy, and instead there's a fog you can't explain — exhaustion, worry that loops at 3 a.m., a version of yourself you don't quite recognize. Or maybe the hard thing is older than that: a childhood that taught you to hold everyone together, a family pattern you swore you'd break before it reached your own kids.

You can be deeply grateful for your life and still feel like it's pressing on you. Both of those can be true in the same breath, and neither one makes you a bad parent, partner, or person.

What would you say to someone who’s nervous or unsure about starting therapy?

Becoming a parent can crack you open in ways nobody warns you about — and so can carrying a childhood you're determined not to pass down. I'm Melissa Harper, a licensed clinical professional counselor at Tides Mental Health, and I hold a certification in perinatal mental health because this work matters to me personally as well as professionally. If any of this sounds like where you are, there's room here for the whole of it. Reach out when you're ready — we can start slow.

What It’s Like to Work Together

Sessions with me tend to feel warm and unhurried. I'm laid-back by nature, so this won't feel like a clinical interview — it feels more like being met by someone who's genuinely on your side and isn't rattled by the hard stuff. .

Together we'll make sense of what you're carrying: the emotions that are hard to name, the stories you've absorbed about who you are, and the patterns that show up in your closest relationships. Using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, we'll loosen the grip of the thoughts pulling you around and reconnect you with what you actually value as a parent, partner, and person. With Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, we'll look honestly at the beliefs running underneath the anxiety and test whether they're really telling you the truth.

We'll also draw on Internal Family Systems to get curious about the different parts of you — the one that overfunctions, the one that's scared, the one that just wants rest — so they stop fighting each other. And because I work from your strengths, we're always building on what's already resilient in you, not just managing what hurts.

What does a session feel like?

A session with me is calm and low-pressure. You don't have to arrive with the right words or a tidy summary of your week — you can show up tired, tearful, or unsure where to begin. Building trust takes time, and I'm trauma-informed, so there's never any push to open a door before you're ready. We move at a rhythm that feels safe to you.

Why I’m passionate about this work

I care about this work because I've lived pieces of it. I know what postpartum depression and anxiety feel like from the inside, and I know the particular grief of fertility struggles and loss. I also grew up between two cultures, sorting out identity in real time. Those experiences gave me a well-rounded, empathetic view — and a deep belief that no one should have to navigate these seasons alone.

Whatever season brought you here — a new baby, an old wound, or a life that quietly stopped feeling like yours — you don't have to sort it out by yourself. Perinatal struggles and generational patterns aren't signs that you're failing; they're exactly the kind of thing I'm trained and personally moved to help you work through. When you're ready, I'd be glad to walk alongside you.
